1. If you're looking to meet people online that you really click and connect with, be discerning about websites and chat rooms that you frequent. If you're looking for someone that you might have a romantic relationship with, then check out a few dating websites. Or, if you're looking for someone to talk about your same interests, like books, movies and music, look for a forum that discusses those topics and jump in. Actively search for the kind of person you'd like to meet.

Be Honest

2. Sometimes it can be tempting to create a completely different persona online than what you are like in real life, to attract different people and to escape from your life. However, try not to exaggerate yourself too much. Be honest about your life, job and appearance. You probably would be annoyed if someone you were connecting with online divulged that his persona wasn't true, so don't do the same thing to other people. Always be as honest as possible when meeting people online, so you can make real connections based on your actual personality and interests.

Be Safe

3. An important part of meeting people online is the safety issue. Never share personal information over the Internet, even if you feel you are making a real connection. Always be ambiguous when it comes to where you live and work. It doesn't mean you need to lie, but you shouldn't give out addresses, personal numbers or too much information that would be dangerous in the wrong hands. If you decide to meet someone in person that you connected with online, do so on neutral ground in a public place, never at someone's home or at your home.
